This treaty states the freedoms, family environments, basic health and welfare, education, lesiure, asctivites and special protections measures for all children. Freely chosen, self directed play means that the children are in charge. They chose how to do an activity and why they want to do it.
A child can have freely chosen play on their own or along side a group of peers. It gives them the freedom to come up with their own ideas at their own speed. This enables the children to grow in self confidence and creativity. It is important to support and encourage this sort of play but it is also important not to take control or try and direct the children. My setting is organsised into different sections such as painting, role play, outdoors, writing, maths, sand and computer area so that the children have the freedom to go between each seaction as and when they please enabling them to explore self directed play as and when they want.
The children need to remember that it is their turf and that they are free to express their own ideas and imagination. So my role would be to let the children think up their own games, then join in to bring my ideas together with theirs to support their development as much as possible. Resilience stops them feeling lonely, fearful and vulnerable.
How a child is spoken to and treated impacts on their emotional identity. Negative interaction with a child or young person will result in a negative identity. If a child is ignored, not given high expectations, lacks support and encouragement they may view themselves as someone of little importance or worth. The environment in which they live can impact on their social identity. If they come from an area that is run down or known for its social problems they will be viewed as being part of the culture of the area. They will be given a negative social identity and may adopt one because it is the norm in the area or they have a desire to fit in. This could negatively impact on their well being and resilience.
A poor self image leads to negative feeling about who they are and what they can achieve, resulting in poor self esteem. It is therefore important that children and young people are encouraged and supported to understand, not only their own self image and identity, but those of the people around them. Identity and self image are about a sense of belonging. By showing children and young people that we are all different and that this is acceptable you are giving them the confidence to be themselves. By being understanding and adaptable you are showing them that they can develop and change their sense of who they are with each new experience and become the person they want to be.
It then gets them to look at what is going right for them at the moment and explores the small steps needed to continue on this path in order to attain their preferred future. Working consistently together will enable the young person to gain an understanding of what is expected of her and promote positive behaviour. As the young person is unable to make decisions for herself, through assessment I was able to put a plan in place strategies that involve the young persons likes and take into account that it had been observed that she thrives on attention although lately most attention being negative I wanted to make changes to the way we worked with the young person using praise for her to gain the attention that she thrives on.
